FITNESSGRAM® / ACTIVITYGRAM®

FITNESSGRAM was developed in 1982 by The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas. The objective was to increase parental awareness of children's fitness levels by developing an easy way for physical education teachers to report the results of physical fitness assessments.

Student's are assessed in three general areas of health-related fitness. Scores are evaluated against objective criterion standards that indicate a level of fitness necessary for health.

The standards were established by the FITNESSGRAM Scientific Advisory Board. Technical information on the fitness assessments and standards is available in the Reference Guide.

Participants receive objective, personalized feedback and positive reinforcement which are vital to changing behavior and serve as a communications link between teachers and parents.

In 1999, ACTIVITYGRAM was introduced with version 6.0 of the FITNESSGRAM software. ACTIVITYGRAM is a physical activity assessment that also includes a report for parents. Students record their physical activity every 30 minute period from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. for two school days and one non-school day. ACTIVITYGRAM was developed to make students and parents aware of levels of physical activity. Another objective was to communicate that participating in physical activity most every day is a critical part of developing fitness and maintaining lifelong health.

The instructor may generate individual student reports using plain paper or pre-printed forms, group summary reports and a statistical report that provides an overview of group results.

Used in conjunction with its youth fitness partner, PHYSICAL BEST, FITNESSGRAM is part of a complete fitness education program available for use by school teachers and youth fitness leaders.
