Nutrition Now

Summary

Nutrition Now is a process and a program. The Cooper Institute (CI) first trains your staff in healthy eating principles. Then your staff are trained on adult learning concepts, engaging teaching methods and the Nutrition Now curriculum. Finally, your instructors are ready to teach a general population about nutrition basics using CI-developed materials and CI-tested programs. These evidence-based programs include Healthy Eating Every Day and Active Living Every Day, which are both disseminated through a partnership with Human Kinetics Publishers.

How Did Nutrition Now Get Started?

In 2007, The U.S. Navy, in partnership with The Cooper Institute (CI), launched Navy Nutrition Now. CI educators taught 25 Navy Health and Fitness leaders how to educate people in their communities about better nutrition.

“The Navy recognizes the link between chronic disease and nutrition and wants to be more proactive in helping people make positive lifestyle changes,” said Stephen Farrell, Ph.D., CI director of professional education, who helped train the course participants. Our Navy Nutrition Now program ultimately has the potential to reduce deaths from chronic diseases.”

How Does the Navy Use the Program?
Navy Health and Fitness Leaders first completed 3 days of CI training in Providing Dietary Guidance (add link to description) Over the next two days, these leaders also learned how to use the Nutrition Now curriculum materials including slides, scripts and the workbook. This specially-designed 100-page workbook covers topics such as maintaining dietary changes, managing a healthy weight, eating out, eating for performance, and being a smart consumer. On the last day of training, the participants presented a segment of the Nutrition Now program to their fellow classmates and were critiqued by CI educators.

The Fitness and Health Leaders then returned to their respective home states and countries. They were each responsible for educating people about healthier living through better eating habits. Nutrition knowledge improved 22% as evidenced by differences in pre- and post-test scores.
